Your consultation meeting is the initial step on the road to a flourishing hair transplant. A hair restoration consultation will allow for surgeons to assess the state of your hair loss, approximation to the degree of continuous hair loss and determine if you’re a respectable contender for the hair restoration surgery. Following your meeting, your hair transplant doctor will then offer recommendations.
Here are some of the top questions most people ask:
Does having a hair transplant hurt?
- Only the initial needle injections, which takes ½ of a second until the area is free of any discomfort. After that there is only the care of your transplanted area, meaning to try not to bump your head for the first week or so.
What is the best medication available for hair loss?
Finasteride aka “Propecia”
- Finasteride is accessible to men through prescription only. Finasteride is in pill form and is taken once a day at only 1/4 of each pill. Research specifies that Finasteride stops hair loss on top of your head and can re-grow that hair. We recommend Finasteride for all male hair loss patients. Women who are or may develop into becoming pregnant should NOT take or handle this medication, because Finasteride may bring about birth defects.
Minoxidil aka “Rogaine”
- Minoxidil or “Rogaine” is accessible to men or women without a prescription. It is spritz or smoothed into your scalp two times a day. Minoxidil is frequently advocated for females who suffer pattern-loss since women can’t take Finasteride (Propecia). Scientific studies indicate that Minoxidil seems to work best on people younger than thirty years of age who have been losing their hair for less than five years. Some people who use Minoxidil only grow hair that is flimsy and frail.
How long does the surgery usually take?
- It very much depends on the extent of work you’re comfortable moving forward with. If your plan is to have as much coverage as possible in one surgery; meaning what is referred to as a “mega-session” of 3,500 grafts or more, then you could expect somewhere from 6-10 hours depending. If you’re looking to have a smaller session under 3,500 then the time-frame could be from 4-6 hours.
How long until my transplants start to grow?
- After you have successfully completed your hair transplant, there is usually an initial “shedding phase” in which most of the transplanted hairs will release and fall out. Not to fear, because the transplanted follicle “bulb” is still intact in your head, healing and re-growing. At which point you can start to see great results by month 4-5, with about 70% of regrowth. By month 10-12 you should be experiencing a full head of hair and usually it’s at 100% by that time.
What is the cause to losing your hair?
- DHT is the main reason for male pattern baldness. Your hair characteristics usually takes place within one of a number of specific patterns medically known as “Androgentic-Alopecia” or the popular term, Male Pattern Baldness. In women, it’s known as Female Androgentic-Alopecia. No more than around 1% of hair loss is brought on by any other circumstances but “Androgentic-Alopecia”. These consist of a variety of nutritional, metababolic in addition to hormone disorders.Male pattern baldness includes a genetic defenselessness of some of the hair follicles to the hormone DHT (Dihydrotestosterone). This hormone acting over time on these prone follicles brings about a gradual reduction, (shrinking), and as a final point death of these follicles.
How much will my hair transplant cost?
- Depending on the results and information gathered from the consultation. This includes your category of hair-loss, type of hair, scalp elasticity, personal circumstances, donor measurements and your ideal results. Pricing and financial options page here.
What kind of results can I expect from my hair transplant?
- First is the follicular graft adherence phase, in which the transplanted grafts have healed in place without worries of dislodging and falling out. We advise our patients to avoid bumping their heads and causing trauma to the transplanted area. The follicular graft adherence phase is approximately 3 to 7 days. If you’ve had an FUG or Strip Method procedure, staples usually come out between 10 to 15 days. Within 30 days or so, most patients experience the follicular graft shedding phase, in which the transplanted graft follicle is in tact but sheds the old hair to renew growth of the new transplanted hairs. While that is happening, your new transplanted hair is then growing and healing at the same time. Full recovery and growth occurs between month 9-12, but even more maturity and growth can be expected beyond that time-frame.
